Job Description

The eBay Local Marketplace team is tasked with creating a vibrant new marketplace for the casual seller (the neighbor next door) which will open up new opportunities for eBay’s business.  We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer with an entrepreneurial bent for an opportunity to work with an engineering team in building world class search user experience for one of the largest eCommerce website in the world – eBay!
 
We are a small team of 20+ engineers and testers who develop and build world class search user experience. We are an agile scrum team and huge believers of experimentation, prototyping, building working software and constantly delivering products based on our customer needs. We work closely with our business unit, product managers, user experience research, user experience design, customer service and most importantly with our customers in understanding the search experience.
  • This is a role for a strong developer who loves software development and dealing with interesting challenges with traffic volume, scalability and user experiences.
  • Use eBay’s well defined services and API’s and unleash the power of the marketplace and the infrastructure in building user experiences that wins users loyalty, builds inspirational shopping behavior, be constantly in the mode of learning, experimenting and tracking performance.
  • Build services necessary to extend the functionalities of our search platform.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, QA and Operations teams to architect and develop strategic and tactical solutions.
  • Lead and estimate engineering effort, plan implementations, and rollout for complex experiences.
  • Must be able to independently design code and test major features, as well as work jointly with other team members to deliver complex experiences.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to other team members.
  • Share support, release, and on-call responsibilities.
 

Job Qualifications


  • BS in Computer Science or engineering or science disciplines from a top university is required. MS in Computer Science is preferred.
  • 8+ years experience in requirements analysis, design, coding and unit testing of scalable, distributed, customer facing eCommerce applications.
  • 4+ years Java experience - need to be an expert in Java.
  • Prior experience with search/recommendation/classification applications and domains is required.
  • Require strong experience of building web services and building experiences and applications consuming web services.
  • Excellent understanding of computer science fundamentals, data structures, and algorithms.
  • Solid understanding of tracking and user analytics and experimentation.
    Proven results oriented person with a delivery focus in a high velocity, high quality environment.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Expertise required in object-oriented design methodology and application development in Java.
  • Solid DB (SQL) skills.
